As a teenager, Sid got bored with running and decided to try his hand at mountain biking. He and his friend were into down hilling and trials riding at the time. Their motto was, "If it’s not head high, it’s not high enough" or, "if both wheels aren’t sliding you\'re not going fast enough". Eventually Sid was spotted by the Tasmanian Institute of Sport talent identification program and was thrown onto a road bike. During two years as a junior he struggled to stay inside the top 10 at XC Nationals. Determined not to be out done, he earned selection in his first Australian National Team to represent his country at the 2000 World Championships in Spain. From 2001 he has been chalking up a number of National Championship titles and gone on to be riding with the top 10 in the World. It appeared, and he still prefers, the dry dusty tracks of the outback compared to cow-sh#t ridden European mud! The obvious culmination of all this effort was to be selected in the 2004 Olympic Team, followed by a factory ride for 2005 with the Global Bicycle leader, Specialized. With their support he went on to achieve his best result to date - a World Cup Podium. After a year full of rock star frequent flyer miles and constant jetlag, he spent the next two years as part time rider / small time property developer / professional share market gambler. This feisty Tasmanian Devil was robbed of a Beijing Olympic berth through sporting politics but he’s out to correct the wrong and making sure he has the best support possible for 2009 and beyond. Keep an eye out for the hard arsed Aussie who is more determined and dedicated than ever before. You can expect big things from him and his Sho-Air teammates over the next four years!
By far, the best moment of his career occurred when he married Pip, the better half with the brains and a PhD in Medical research. Baby Zarlee adores Sid too, but doesn’t like running with Dad…. Making him drag her after 200m of trotting on all four paws (she actually does prefer a dip at the beach, but her furry body isn’t really suited to swimming). He’s now based in LA and can be spotted lining up his S-Works against the Ferrari’s and Aston Martin\'s of the rich and famous celebrities. Some chocolate rarely goes astray for these activities and it is to be duly noted that Sid’s second talent is a trained nose for finding his wife’s secret stash of Cadbury’s.
